If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, it was meant to be. In 2016, frontman Keith Latinen quit nearly everything music related by dissolving his band Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) after a decade of constant writing and touring. Little by little, the desire to write again trickled though until it finally came flooding back. Latinen picked himself up and began to pour his heart into something new.

The end result is the debut solo full length "Then the Lightness Leaves and I Become Heavy Again". While the album bears Latinen's hallmark sounds- chimey guitars, intimate drumming, and confessional vocals, it also lauds a more nuanced approach to songwriting. Each song feels like an open book, a new entry that shows life goes on no matter how bad the losses.

Latinen plays guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, and sings, but is joined by a large cast of friends who lent their talents: Matt Hull, Brandon Lutmer, Warren Franklin, Mat Halliday, Andrew Stefano, Cathy Latinen, Colleen Dow, Ana Hughes Perez, Ben Hendricks, Brian Carley, Nick Kwas, Elliot Green, and Jacob West.

"Then the Lightness Leaves and I Become Heavy Again" comes out digitally and on vinyl 10/21.

'This Is Not the Way I Wanted You to Find Out' is the debut of the long awaited solo project from Empire! Empire! front man, Keith Latinen. The title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that the EP was written and recorded in a little over a month in preparation for the band's first tour and will come out before the LP that was written and recorded over the past few years.

Latinen plays every note and sings every word. Somber vocals stretch over beautiful and sparse guitar work and introspective drums. If you liked his previous bands, or his current one, Parting- you're going to love this. For fans of Death Cab for Cute, Jimmy Eat World, and Mineral.

Comes with instant download, art may vary from mock.

lyrics

Mostly, I've stopped trying to force myself to go to bed early

Sheets become fire,
heat washing over me
like my body is embarrassed
of the things I could never be
(productive, punctual, good at upkeep...)

A sound machine makes me
think that I'm hearing things
as white noise morphs into a nonsensical phrase
on endless repeat
and no amount of will power
can bend the words to other beings

I refuse to look at the clock
so time stands still
as though nothing and everything is happening all at once

Then, my brain tells me it is time to get stuck on something else-
like how, when I was 19, I felt depression swallow me so whole
that it took parts of three years away from me
and almost caused me to fail out of college

Maybe how I thought I was doing the right things,
but never actually listening

Or how no matter how old my body gets, my mind is still the same
and one day, if I'm lucky, I'll feel like a young man trapped in an old man's body

So I stay up and distract myself instead, and wait for sleep to come to me
